CHILDREN ARE INSPIRED AND MORE MOTIVATED TO READ
It’s important to get
better at reading!
- Child, Year 1, Earlsmead Primary School, London
My child became confident
with reading. He loves reading
all sorts of books now.
- Parent
28%
average increase in children’s
reading attitudes and behaviours
over the year (such as confidence,
persistence and motivation)*
*Statistically, this percentage represents a highly significant
change (p < .001), with a large effect size. See appendix for
definitions of terminology.
Our programme has kindled lasting enthusiasm for reading, with measurable
improvements in children’s reading attitudes and behaviours when it comes to
motivation to read.
The data shows consistent growth in motivation:
79% of teachers reported children were more inspired to read
73% of parents noticed increased motivation
Children independently choosing new books increased by 29%
This increased motivation manifests differently across year groups, but
consistently shows in:
Children initiating reading activities
Greater interest in diverse reading materials
Increased reading outside of scheduled sessions
More frequent voluntary participation in reading activities
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IF YOU ASKED HER TO COME AND READ WITH YOU, SHE WOULD BE QUITE RELUCTANT TO DO
THAT, WHEREAS NOW YOU ASK HER, SHE'S LIKE - YES, I'LL COME, STRAIGHT AWAY, SKIPS OVER, AND SO IT'S JUST LIKE A
REAL VISIBLE CHANGE IN HER.
- Teacher, Manchester primary school
