Chapter One Impact Report 2023-24 - Flipbook - Page 32
THE IMPACT ON OUR VOLUNTEERS
Our reading programme doesn't just transform children's lives - it enriches the lives of
our volunteers too. In 2023-24, we gathered feedback from 1,163 volunteers about their
experience with Chapter One.
Growing awareness and understanding
WHEN I WAS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL, I
REALLY STRUGGLED WITH READING.
WHEN I READ ABOUT CHAPTER ONE,
AND HOW MUCH IT HELPS YOUNG
CHILDREN, I JUMPED AT THE
OPPORTUNITY TO BE INVOLVED IN
SOMETHING THAT I KNOW WOULD
HAVE BENEFITTED ME PERSONALLY.
Eight in ten volunteers (80%) reported becoming more aware of literacy as a social issue
through their involvement with Chapter One. Many shared how this deeper
understanding helped them appreciate the challenges some children face with reading.
Personal and professional growth
Volunteers reported developing various skills through their reading sessions:
48% gained greater understanding and empathy with others
40% enhanced their communication skills
37% became more adaptable and flexible
