THE LINK BETWEEN READING FOR
PLEASURE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
Research shows clearly that
collaborations between the charity
and corporate sectors can encourage
positive reading behaviours and
thus prosperity.
IF ALL CHILDREN IN THE UK READ
FOR PLEASURE DAILY*:
The number of children achieving
five good GCSEs could increase by
1.1 million in 30 years.
This would boost lifetime earnings of
the individuals by £57,500
and boost the UK’s GDP by up to
£4.6 billion each year

OUR SOCIAL VALUE IN 2023-24
£358,154
DELIVERED BY OUR CORPORATE
PARTNERS THROUGH THE CHAPTER ONE
ONLINE READING VOLUNTEERS
PROGRAMME
Social value can demonstrate, in simple
monetary terms, the positive impacts
that an organisation has on the wider
community. The National Themes,
Outcomes and Measures (TOMs) is a
framework for delivering excellence in
measuring and reporting social value.
Developed by Social Value Portal, the
TOMs framework has evolved into a
social value measurement standard
across the UK.
This was calculated by multiplying the total
number of hours (21,155) that Chapter One
volunteers read with children as part of the
Online Reading Volunteers Programme by
the proxy TOMs value of £16.93, to give a
social return on investment.
This represents a 9.29% increase from
£324,878 in 2022-23, showing our growing
impact.
To better understand and measure our
total impact going forward, we've
partnered with Impact Advantage in 202425 and will be using their measurement
platform, impact.Ai, which goes much
further than traditional proxy values. This
will allow us to truly understand and
showcase the profound impact our
programmes have on children, volunteers
and companies alike.
Using the National TOMs Framework we
estimate our corporate partners
delivered £358,154 of social value
through Chapter One in 2023-24.
