HOW WE SUPPORTED COMMUNITY-LEVEL CHANGE WITH
HEIDELBERG MATERIALS UK AND THEIR SUPPLY CHAIN
In 2023-24, Chapter One's partnership
with Heidelberg Materials UK
demonstrated how corporate
volunteering can create meaningful social
value across multiple communities.
Heidelberg Materials not only engaged
their own employees but also invited their
supply chain partners including Costain,
Dorset Council, BAM Construction, Kier,
Skanska, Colas, and National Highways to
participate as online reading volunteers.
Volunteers from Heidelberg Materials UK
and their supply chain partners
collectively supported 61 children across
five UK regions, with 60 volunteers
delivering 694 reading sessions - totalling
300 hours of one-to-one reading support.
Heidelberg Materials UK's commitment
extended beyond volunteer hours, with
the company investing over 120 hours in
our volunteer training to ensure highquality support for children.
The partnership has been particularly
effective in demonstrating how
businesses can amplify their social
value through collaboration. By
engaging their supply chain,
Heidelberg Materials UK helped
Chapter One reach more children in
areas of need while ensuring the
programme benefited from diverse
volunteer perspectives.
"Our colleagues have enjoyed
volunteering with Chapter One,
strengthening our team's sense of
purpose and community engagement.
Together, we're making a meaningful
impact on the future generation," said
Claire Chapman from Costain.
The volunteers themselves found the
experience rewarding. Susan
Hetherington from Dorset Council
noted: "It is a rewarding experience
noticing the progress the pupil is
making... I have refreshed some skills
such as active listening, use of plain
English, coaching styles, and of course
using phonics."
